Abu Bakar Mosque is located in Bradford 3, it has a regular congregation of around 300 worshippers and this increases to over 2000 for the main prayer of the week on Fridays. It originally operated from a terrace house over 30 years ago, and then a disused police station on Leeds Road. From this site, the community realising the ever growing population of worshipers worked hard to raise over a million pounds and build a brand new building. They moved into this current building around 9 years ago and the previous building is still in use as a supplementary school.
The Mosque activities include receiving delegations from all faiths, from all over the country and even America. We have had Christian groups from the U.S.A last month. The Mosque has always been the focal point for the community's fund raising activities. After the Tsunami dissaster, it invited to the Mosque and presented the Lord Mayoress of Bradford with a cheque for £12,500. Further after the Kashmir earthquake disaster it presented a cheque for the Goverment of Pakistans Consular for £45,000.
The Mosque has regular education programmes with the last one been held on the 16th of August. This program was specifically targetted at the youth with all speeches and presentations in english. Guest speakers came from around the country to speak about the importance of good character, the values of faith, and the perils of crime and prisons. The event was attended by around 500 youngsters and closed with a delicious meal for everyone.
Since last year, the Mosque has also installed a transmitter and distributed receivers to the surrounding households. This has enabled women, the disabled and anyone else not able to visit the Mosque to listen to speeches from the comfort of their own homes. The Imam of the Mosque has ensured that this new technology has been put to good use, and that all programs are delivered in English and community languages. Speeches have covered a wide range of community issues - including health, crime prevention, pro-social behaviour, education, and parenting skills.
We look forward to welcoming you to our Mosque. Thank you!
