The Shree Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Bradford is the North of England's largest and most ornate Hindu Shrine - the temple has been built using Yorkshire stone and the white marble used in the shrine room has been taken from the same quarry that was used for the famed Taj Mahal. The complex houses the main Shrine room, a day centre for the elderly, classrooms, communal kitchen and dining facilities, offices and an apartment for the resident priest and his family.
The shrine itself was carved by expert stone masons who were flown in from India to undertake this major project, the builders and architects used were local, and the congregation that prays at this temple come from all over the North of England. Although the building has won prestigious awards for its design and construction it is very much a working temple complex and is used by ALL members of the Hindu community.
The temple is already a main focal point in Bradford for school children and other groups who regularly come from all over the UK to look around our building and get an insight into the World's oldest faith, Hinduism.
The Shree Lakshmi Narayan Temple is the ONLY purpose built place of worship that has been officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen during her entire Reign, and we are hopeful that others will come and look around our vision that has taken 30 years to complete.
