St. Peter's Church stands in a lovely setting, on the banks of the River Wharfe and in a field surrounded by a picturesque and much loved churchyard. It is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It has been a Christian site since Saxon times, Archbishop Wulfhere of York having fled here for sanctuary in AD867 when the Vikings invaded that city.
The church houses the remains of the shaft from a stone cross from Saxon times and we know from recent excavations that it is the site of an extensive Saxon-age burial ground. It is also the site of a medieval manor with fishponds. The Dales Way goes through our church field.
The Church is open all the time for visitors and there are seats in the grounds outside. Visitors to the Church will be able to see a reproduction of a volume of The Saint John's Bible. Commissioned by the monks of Saint John's Abbey and University, Minnesota, the Saint John's Bible is the first handwritten and illuminated bible to be completed since the invention of the printing press.
