26 Elizabeth Street Elland, was bought in 1972 and was used for Friday prayers and for teaching children the holy Qur’an. In 1978 the community acquired 34-Elizabeth Street (at the back of 26 Elizabeth Street), and obtained planning permission for the change of use to that of a mosque.
In 1980, the Mosque community removed the middle wall to make a larger room for the benefit of worshippers, at both ground floor and first floor levels. Ablution facilities were also built in the back yard in 1980, thereby giving the full use of the building over to that of a fully recognisable Mosque.
One hundred people can now pray at the Mosque any one time. However, Elland has a Muslim population of about 600 people and the Mosque is now getting too small for the volume of its potential users. It is likely that bigger premises will need to be found in the next 5 to 10 years.premises will need to be found in the next 5 to 10 years.
