The church was originally constructed in 1180 by the masons who built Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds. Outside, there is a bell cote and cross on the roof, and a bell tower. In the 1850s a vestry was added, and in 1992, a community room, toilet and kitchen were provided. The splendid rood hangs from the chancel roof, and is complemented by the Victorian pews and Robert Thompson (mouseman) pews and candlesticks in the St Nicholas Chapel.
The stained glass windows are a major feature, especially the 21-panels of the life of Christ that make up the East window (11 panels date from the 11th century and the rest from the 19th century).
Key events in history include Rev George Burnett moving 'The Elland Society' to Elland when he became rector, and the Elland Feud in the 14th century, which culminated in the death of the De Eland family on their way to St Mary's Church. The Savile family took over the lands.
