A handsome ashlar-faced building, St Matthew’s was built in 1798, and boasts of a 10th or 11th century Saxon Cross base in the churchyard, as well as tower with clock surmounted by cupola and weather vane.

Internally, St Matthew’s has 2 Royal Coats of Arms including one for William III from either 1689 or 1690, a frieze on the east wall of the apse depicting the prophets and apostles of Christian scripture, and a Christus Rex painting on apse ceiling, as well as a list of vicars from 1363.  The box-pews were replaced in the 1870s (but still remain in the gallery) and the narthex was formed in 2000, by the positioning of glass screen under the west gallery.

Community use of the church includes Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs & Scouts; a theatrical society, parents and toddler group and a Traidcraft stall.  The Church also runs ‘Beer and Banter’ sessions in a local public house.
