The Bahá'í faith, dates from 1844, and believes, in the words of Bahá'u'lláh the faith’s founder, that "the earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.” There are around 6,000 Bahá’ís in the UK, of which there are 20 members in Calderdale and 130 in West Yorkshire.
Social & economic development projects around the world include primary and secondary schools, literacy projects, grassroots agricultural development project, healthcare, and the development of democracy. These projects are always open to everyone, whether Bahá’í or not.
There are no clergy or individuals in positions of personal leadership - administration is by elected bodies at local, national and international levels. The UK’s National Spiritual Assembly was one of the first to be established in 1923. Proselytising is forbidden. Prayer or readings of the 100 volumes of the writings of Bahá'u'lláh in the holy book of laws (Kitáb-i-Aqdas) is undertaken in homes or community centres.
