The church was opened as a United Methodist church on 23rd March 1907 by Mrs Eli Fletcher, having had its foundation stone laid on 28 July 1906.  There is an inscription on the front of the building. The church is believed to be the only one of this denomination’s buildings to be in regular use.  It was also known as Boothtown Road Methodist Chapel or Methodist Free Church, Boothtown. The first wedding took place here on 21st May 1908.

The congregation merged with that of Akroydon Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (f. 1871), Heap Street / Fern Street when that church closed in 1964, and which then reopened as the Eastern Orthodox Church of Saint John the Baptist (a Serbian Orthodox church).

The current communion table in Boothtown Methodist Church (remembering those who served in World War I) arrived from Akroyden when the two communities amalgamated.
