The Chapel and adjoining cottage was opened in 1773 and was originally known as Bradshaw Chapel. John Wesley (the founder of Methodism) visited the new chapel on 22 April 1774 and stayed the night in the cottage, returning many times until his last visit to preach as a frail 87-year old in 1790. In 1815 the original building was demolished and the new chapel erected in its place, with a Sunday School being added the following year.
In 1892 the organ was built and installed by Charles Anneessen et fils, of Grommont in Belgium – his grandson visited in 1969.
Key features of the building include a sundial outside on the front, and inside there is a large collection of Wesleyana, a large amount of which was donated by Horace Hird’s widow in his name in 1977.
The Chapel is frequently visited by the Wesley Historical Society and various Antiquarian Societies and educational establishments, which reflects the importance of its links to John Wesley.
