St Mary’s was built on the site of a former Elizabethan chapel of ease in 1817 to a design by Thomas Taylor.  The Chancel was added in 1866 and extended in 1910.  The Tower Clock is by William Potts of Leeds 1893 and strikes the hour on a 2cwt bell - access to the tower can be made by arrangement.  An Octagonal stone post standing near the path in the graveyard is the base of the 1625 churchyard cross that was returned to the church from the garden of Ellen Royd following its Civil War removal.

Inside, the large oil painting of Madonna and child is by Clement Burton and the painting on the west wall of the church ‘The agony in the Garden’ is oil on wood and attributed to Pompeo Massani 1850 – 1920.

The 1960 high altar rails are by “mouseman” John Thompson of Kilburn and there are large memorials of the Appleyard, Dearden and Murgatroyd families.
