The church was founded by John Fawcett, who was originally minister of the nearby Baptist Church at Wainsgate, Old Town.

As the Industrial Revolution began and the town of Hebden Bridge, in the bottom of the valley grew, Fawcett decided to found a new church in the centre of the growing town. This opened in 1777 and was originally known as Ebenezer Chapel.  It can still be seen on Market St, Hebden Bridge.

By 1856, the church was too small and the existing building was opened in 1858.  The church prospered and the building was extended in 1880.  A second building, now the Hebden Bridge library, was built in 1871 to house the Sunday School.

The church has continued to play an important role in the community throughout the years. Redevelopment of the church buildings has already begun, with redecoration of rooms to the rear of the main sanctuary and installation of a new central heating boiler. The church has received grant funding to replace the roof.

To ensure that the church continues to meet the needs of the community, it has established the John Fawcett Centre as a means of promoting spiritual wellbeing for all.
