The Muslim community came to Todmorden in the early 1960’s from Pakistan and Bangladesh to work in the textile mills and the iron foundry works. In the mid-1970s some local community members started reading their prayers at home and visited Rochdale to pray in congregation.
In 1979, the then vacant Todmorden Spiritual Church was purchased by the Muslim community to be converted into the mosque. The building has a cornerstone which was laid on 7th June 1913 and opened by A.J. Schofield on 8th November 1853, this superseded Todmorden Spiritualist’s Temple.
The mosque provides after-school classes for young people in the evening. They are taught in small groups by two teachers. It holds regular programmes, some aimed at young people, with all speeches in English. Every year the community gets together and celebrates Eid at the Town Hall. Many activities and much food helps all communities to get together.
