There has been a church on the site since Anglo-Saxon times.  Since the late 14th century its history has been closely linked with the Savile family.  The Church is of interest as an hstoric building and its outstanding medieval stained glass.  It is a Grade I listed building and cited in Simon Jenkin's England's Thousand Best Churches as a warm and friendly building.  In the Savile chapel are two windows in the North Wall from 1447 showing a crucifix on one and Thomas and Lady Savile on another, and a further window on the South wall showing scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.  The Chapel's east wall has a 'Doom Window', and the great West window of the Chancel depitcs the Jesse Tree. There is a display of our Runic Stones in the Savile Chapel.
