ST. JAMES' CHURCH

Church Street, Heckmondwike, WF16 0AX
The Church was built in the 1820s and was one of the "Waterloo" churches built at a cost of £3000 and paid for by a government grant to celebrate British Victory at the battle of Waterloo. The original church structure, the tower and nave, is currently under restoration, and these repairs will be completed by the end of April 2009. The current chancel was built in the early twentieth century, and its rich decoration contrasts with the plain and simple 1820s nave. The Lady Chapel boasts four fine windows depicting angels that were designed by the pre Raphaelite artist, Edward Burne Jones.
