St John's has a Saxon foundation and is a Grade II* Listed building. The oldest parts are the14th Century Beaumont Chapel, with monuments (including the infamous 'Black Dick') and the 15th Century Tower.  There is the original Norman Font, a 12th cent gravestone of the De Heton family and much good Victorian stained glass, and the only WW1 and WW2 War Memorial in Kirkheaton. The graveyard dates from 1624 and contains a monument to 17 children who perished in the Atkinson Mill fire of 1818, a cause for Richard Ostler whose group campaigned for the abolition of child labour in factories.
