The last church designed by Sir Gilbert Scott ("to stem the tide of spiritual destitution") before his death. The construction was supervised by his son, John Oldrid Scott. It was built as amemorial to Dr. W.F.Hook Vicar of Leeds for 22 years. Dr Hook's son Cecil was the first Vicar of All Souls.
The organ was built by Isaac Abbott (later Abbott and Smith), whose workshops were on Blackman Lane itself.
