Welcome to the ancient parish of Felkirk. We have a magnificent ancient church, an Elizabethan School Room that has recently been restored with the aid of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, and what we consider to be one of the best maintained church yards in Yorkshire. We are also situated in pleasant rural countryside with a number of walking trails.

The name Felkirk is a corruption of an Anglo Danish word ‘Fjolkirche’ meaning ‘the church of wood or planks’ which was erected shortly after the local community accepted the Christian faith about the ninth century.

St. Peter’s church dates back to 1120AD. The ancient parish of Felkirk, served five villages which helps to account for its location in open countryside. Today the church serves the villages of South Hiendley and Shafton.

The church was built by Swein the son of Aleric who donated it to Nostell Priory when Thurstan was Archbishop York, which was from 1114 to 1130. It was during the four hundred years when the church was in the care of the Priors of Nostell that it was enlarged. The church still retains a number of Norman features.

The church underwent a major restoration in 1875. It was a remarkably good restoration which left the building, in so far as we can ascertain, exactly as it was when it was first built.

The school room was built in 1580 to serve as the school for the villages served by the parish. It ceased being a school in 1841 when a new building was erected on South Hiendley common. It has since then being used as parish rooms. It has been restored and fitted out with kitchen facilities and toilets. It is a great asset to the church and is used extensively for church and community events.

The church yard contains a number of interesting graves and is kept in excellent order by volunteers. We have a printed church guide and the school room is open for refreshments during organised events.
